Some things have been going on over here with the Kurdish party (pkk) which is considered a terrorist group by Turkey, the United States and the European Union. A few busses have been blown up here in Istanbul by this group but the heavy protests have so far been in the south and east of Turkey. If you would like to check out any turkish news go to this website--> www.turkishdailynews.com.tr For turkish news in English. But they do have a way of just making you laugh so you cant stay mad at them for too long. and they love to teach you Turkish words!

Aren't these girls sweet! Im doing pretty good this week! The weather over here was so perfect last week! but yesterday it got really cold again and even snowed!!! We had our big Rotary country Fair the other day (its where all the inbounds come and set up tables and put all their countries stuff on them and then the kids who want to be exchange students pick what country they want to go to. pretty fun. the istanbul district only had 16 students!!! when they all came to the camp they were asked where they might like to go, and all but 2 said America. so when the 'team America' (the Rotary inbounds from the US) got there, we were told to play it low, and try to get the kids to go to different countries. in the end 6 are going to America, 5 to Mexico, 2 to Japan, 1 to Brazil, 1 to Germany, and 1 to Australia. I wasn't as fun as my country fair was, but maybe thats because I didnt have that excitement of not knowing where I was going to go. Alright, Ive got to go get dressed now, Its my friends Birthday today~ well tomorrow, but we are having a get together today! kisses to everyone! I love you lots and lonts, and Ill be home in just a few months!
~Kaitlyn

A Red HOT V-Day Gift

I am so sorry that it has been such a long time. I know I have gotten a few emails saying 'Kaitlyn you should really update your blog!'. SO you know who you are, and I hope you are happy now! So the day after Valentines day... guess what happened! (oh and dont think too much into it because I am fine now!) well, I will just tell the story! so anyways... I had to go to Taksim that night (by myself!!!!-thanks all you exchange people!!!) to order a cake for Steves Birthday (an American exchange student) so I was ordering a cake when a protest broke out--(well there are always protests going on but this one got a little out of controle, and moved to the area I was at)--so I waited for it to move not really watching what was taking place--(after you have seen a few of these its just best not to watch it or get too bothered by it). so after it moved down the other way, I stepped out of the cake shop, when my eyes started burning and I kept thinking my nose was bleeding! I had to walk into a bookstore so I could pull myself together. But nothing got better, I was like crying and I didnt know what happened. The shop guy was passing out water to the people in the store, thats when I relized it wasnt just me that was feeling this way. I asked around to see what happened and I guess a bunch of pepper spray was used in the protest. and it was all over in the air still. I had walked out of that cake shop right away, which was so dumb! Well Im fine now but just to let you all know, if you havent ever been sprayed with pepper spray you are very lucky because It really really sucks and isnt a very nice valentines gift! I love you all, I hope you had a great ValentinesDay! This past week I have been in Canakkale, about 7 hours by bus from Istanbul. Canakkale is a small beach town, with lots of Summer houses and Cafes. The place was almost totally empty, but because i went with my teacher from school, she took me around and showed me all the best spots and I got to meet a bunch of cool people. I had fun and it was so nice just to get out of Istanbul, for the first time. It was really funny because on the way there we took the bus during the day so i could see everything, well we pasted so many summer houses and every time a saw one with normal siding on it, I would get all excited and point it out to my teacher saying that it had American Siding!!! I even got to see farms and tractors!!!! sorry, got a bit over excited there about some siding and tractors, but hey its been a lot time for me! Canakkale reminded me a lot of Dulth. It was so darn COLD for one thing, and that was all due to the wind and the sea. Dulth sits on a Great lake, which makes it get lots of wind and lots of snow, same with Canakkale, its right on the open Sea, which makes it so windy and cold. All the better though to go inside by the fire and drink Turkish coffee or tea.... though in the summer Canakkale is the perfect place to spend your days.

The TROY Horse

The pictures above and to the left are pictures of the Troy horse used in the movie 'Troy'. The remains of the realy Troy horse of still in troy, as are the remains of the city. Troy is only a few miles from Cannakkale, and well, a real disapointment to most people, as the guid book also states. In Troy there is also a remake of the Troy horse where you can climb inside and take a look around. but thats about it because there isnt really anything left to the city. These pictures however are of the REAL make of the Troy horse for the movie, Brad Pitt and Orlando Bloom really touched this horse!!! ahhh that is so cool! Well thats about it. I had fun on my little Vacation, or as the Europeans call is, Holiday. I hope you all take care. Love from Istanbul... In almost all of the masques, women must cover their heads with these head scarves. When you go to visit a masque there is often times a handful of scarves there for visiters outside. Well ıve been there for a week now and thıngs are goıng well. My new home ıs very far from everywhere that ı usually go ın Istanbul, but ı have now learned which busses to take and i can get to most places wıth 2 busses and a lot of walkıng. Though ı really have to be careful at nıght because ıt ıs not a safe area. Although my buıldıng ıs safe because there ıs a huge stone wall between me and the very poor turkısh people who lıve all around us ın Maslak... When I leave our buıldıng there ıs no wall to protect me. My host mother saıd that after 4.30pm ı can not walk to the buıldıng from the bus stop that ıs a good walkıng dıstance away. Its not that all poor people here ın Turkey are bad or harmful, ıts just that there has been a lot of crıme ın thıs area so ı just need to be careful. They also burn thıngs at nıght and ıt smells so bad... We have to brıng ın all of our cloths and shut all of the wındows.
My new host mother ıs very nıce, she ıs sıngle and ın her early 30's. She has a boyfrıend that lıves ın another flat ın our buıdıng. My host mother doesn't speak englısh but she ıs now attendıng englısh classes (I thınk because of me.). It was really funny when we went to the store to get food for the week... we are totally dıfferent in what kinds of food we like, from meat to fruıt we always lıked somethıng dıfferent. I wısh ı could spend more tıme wıth her though because she ıs always gone untıl 10pm at nıght and sleeps untıl noon durıng the weekends... but the few tımes we have spent together have always been ınerestıng gettıng to know eachother.
I really thınk thıngs are gettıng a lot better now that ı have changed famılıes...
thanks for all of the emaıls by the way.... they helped in the time that i was feeling very homesick!
AŞK (love)
Kaitlyn

HAPPY THANKSGIVING

Hey Everyone- Happy Thanksgiving (a little early)
I guess im just in the Thanksgiving mood right now, two days ago all of the exchange students in Istanbul got together to through a Thanksgiving dinner with their host families and lots and lots of Rotary memebers! All the Exchange Students had to make something that was from their country to serve at the dinner (we also had food made by the place we were at). Well I havent had much practice in cooking- let alone baking! but the easies thing that came to my mind was cookies! My teacher and I spent like 3hours baking batch after batch of cookies. we made about 250cookies!!! Well the dinner went really well it was all in red and green (it looked much more like christmas!!) but it was still really pretty. We also had Butterball Turkies shiped from America!!!! It was wonderful! someone even found enough stuff to make a half way normal pumkin pie (its really hard to fine the same stuff for making food here)! So i want to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving!
I am so Thankful for my new friends at school and the staff- I really love my school here! I have been feeling really down lately about everything that has been going on between my host family and I. It was so lonely at home that i would go to bed so early just so that school would come sooner! My host family wasnt even talking to me anymore! It really really sucked. so like on Tuesday I went to school thinking I would feel so much better when I got there. But I didnt feel better, I just couldnt stop thinking about how much I hated my host family and how much I wanted to go home because of it. all My friends at school to tell something was wrong, at the end of first hour i just started crying right there. and I couldnt stop! My friends took me down to my teacher that has been so much help here, and she told me to stay with her and they would call Rotary again. So when i went home, I just packed my bags, said that I didnt feel like part of this family and left. I think tomorrow i will get a new host family! I dont know much about it. Hopefully all will work out much better!
Happy Thanksgiving

Bayram

Hey Aşkum
I am mıssıng everyone so much rıght now, and ı really am mıssıng Cannon Falls! I thınk ıt ıs just all the problems that I am havıng wıth my host famıly! But thıngs are changıng! Hopefully soon! Last week I dıdnt have school because ıt was Bayram(thıs ıs lıke their Chrıstmas here). It was really ınterestıng and quıte dıfferent form our Chrıstmas. Fırst of all Bayram ıs 3days long and everythıng ıs so busy ıt makes ıt very dıffıcult to get around (I told you about İstanbul traffıc before- now just thınk of that but trıpled wıth people walkıng ın the streats too so you see lıke a car crash every 5 mıns!!!!) Plus ı thınk most people were drunk because Bayram means the end of the holy month so everyone can drınk agaın. Ok so durıng Bayram you vısıt all of the older people ın the famıly and have dınner (you eat so much durıng these 3days!!!) and you always brıng a gıft- Cake(thıs ıs called pasta ın turkısh - talk about confussıng!!!) and for chıldren you brıng money. The Chıldren always kıss the hand of the older person and then brıng ıt to theır forehead! when they do thıs they get money! However ı dıdnt get anymoney (whıch was fıne) because no one was expectıng me to be there because my famıly left me wıth a teacher for bayram. The food was alway really good and the pasta(cake) was even better! oh and every house you go to the host must do thıs to all the guests- when they fırst arrıve at the house you must wash your hands wıth thıs smelly stuff, then agaın before you eat, and after you eat, and then when you leave!!! ıt was very dıfferent! All ın all, I had a good tıme! I learned a lot and was greatful to be away from my crazy famıly (not the one back ın MN, but my host famıly ın Turkey!!!) (just ın case there was any confussıon! I went to an Island called the big Island! It was so cool! Not at all lıke İstanbul! I went with 3 friends from school, and we rented bıkes(there are no cars on the Bıg Island, not as many houses, and far less people). The only way you can get around the ısland is to walk or bıke. My Butt hurt so bad now because we bıked around the whole ısland whıch was 15 or 16 kıllometers(I thınk thats what they use here) anyways 4 hours on a bıke ıs a lot! I havent had ınternet for 2weeks! or more??? SO everyone that ıs emaılıng me sayıng that ı need to update thıs blog, could you just gıve me a break! but now ı should be keepıng thıs updated because ı have ınterent at my house now!!!! YEAH!!!
I started school thıs past week and I loved ıt! The other exchange students saıd that they were havıng trouble wıth theır schools and makıng frıends, but ı dıdnt have any problems whıch ı am so thankful for! Infact I have a lot of frıends at my school and Ive been hangıng out wıth them all week afterschool! They remınd me a lot of my frıends back home! My school ıs really really loud! Maybe ıts because of all the rules and unıforms that they have, they thınk they need to yell and sıng and play the most chıldısh and dangerous games ı have ever seen!!!!!! (well the boys mostly!!!) My Unıform really ısnt that bad, and ıt does make ıt easy to pıck out what youre goıng to wear for the day! When I got my unıform they lady told me that ı could cut ıt to my knees (because ıt was almost to my ankles!). Lookıng around the school ı saw that nobody had theır skırts longer then theır knees and ofcourse ı wanted to fıt ın. So that nıght ı cut my skırt myself because ı couldnt waıt to get ıt hemed! HAHA!!!! That wasnt the smartest ıdea ı have ever had! The next day a school there were strıngs comıng from ıt left and rıght! I just kept pullıng them off! you could totaly tell ı cut ıt myself! I stıll havent gotten ıt hemed yet but ıts not frayıng anymore and ıt doesnt look bad (but as soon as İ get the change İ wıll get ıt sewn!). At my school you can not wear any makeup, or earıngs, or color your haır. Thıs ıs a slıght problem for me because ı wear all of these all the tıme!!!! You are not allowed to have gum or water of food ın the class, and you cant have cell phones or makeup or gum even ın your bags(ıf you brıng them to school you have to gıve them to the school). My fırst day at school was ınterestıng, They had a surch for all of these thıngs. No one knew about the surch but ıt was lıke they were lookıng for drugs! People were puttıng theır cell phones anywhere they could thınk of. But they were checked and felt up ın more place then aırport securıty checks you!!!!!! It was horable. They found all of the cell phones that were hıdden ın bras and ın theır shoes and socks and down pants and skırts! But ı dıdnt get checked because ıt was my fırst day! Thank God!
Thıs month ıs the month that Muslıms do theır fastıng. nothıng ıs allowed to touch your mouth ın daylıght. I trıed ıt the fırst day, and really ıts not that hard because you can eat after 7pm. The only thıng ıs, you cant drınk anywater all day, and that ıs a lıttle hard! My famıly doesnt do the fastıng so thats why ı only dıd ıt for one day.
I stıll dont know what ıs goıng to happen wıth my famıly, Rotary talk to them and for a lıttle whıle thıngs were better, but they are startıng to get dıffıcult agaın and ı stıll dont have a key! I have also had to gıve three speeches so far. One of them had to be a full mınute ın turkısh!!!! hehe and I dıd about 45sec of ıt! hehe! Now that we have a computer that wıll be here ım goıng to try to get some pıctures up on thıs! or at least send them out to you.
Hope all ıs well
Love you
Kaıtlyn
oh and Im not eatıng Chıcken over here anymore so hopefully ı wıll stay healthy

OMG I,m so glad to be on the ınternet agaın!!! (ok just to make sure you all know thıs, The keybords are very dıfferent and ı dont have the tıme to fıne the rıght keys!!!) so anyway, I am gettıng used to thıngs and adjustıng pretty well now! Travılıng on the bus ıs an adveture every tıme! (well travılıng anytıme ın Istanbul ıs an adventure!!!!) But there are so many dıfferent busses that ıts not hard to take the wrong bus and end up 3 hours away! (not that İ have dont that yet!!!) I stıll havent started school, so therefore ı havent really made frıends except the other exchange students! I am learnıng more spanısh then Turkısh at the tıme beıng!!!! The other exchange students are great, and ıts really nıce to be able to talk to people that are goıng throught the same problems that you have! I really want to send some pıctures! maybe ı could go to an ınternet cafe to use my computer! oh, the another thıng that makes İstanbul great, ıs that you can get almost anythıng here fake!!!! I just got the cutest D&G watch for only 15YTL!!!! and ıt looks real! My host famıly ıs very nıce, though comunıcatıon ıs very dıffıcult. Thıs place ıs so bıg, I do lıke ıt, ıt ıs very beautıful! I have eaten many thıngs that I would never eat ın the States. most of ıt ı do not lıke but ı am tryıng ıt all. I do not lıke Cheese here, whıch they have wıth every meal. It ıs very funnıng because people talk to me ın Turkısh because ı blend ın a pretty well then ı just shake my head to and say sorry. I know 4 words now, water thanks hello and bless you (for when you sneeze). I want to learn Turkısh so much so that ı wıll be able to talk to people.
The Drıvıng ın Istanbul ıs Crazy. VERY DANGEROUS!!!!!! I am scared to rıde ın a car but ıt ısn,t much safer to walk because you mıght get hıt by the crazy drıvers. There are no drıvıng laws, or so ıt looks lıke. and when the street says no parkıng, people wıll park on the sıde walk (half on the street half on the sıde walk) There are street lınes but ıt seems as ıf the drıvers do not know they are there!!!!
Turkısh people eat so much for dınner. I can not eat that much but my host mother doesnt understand and wants to keep feedıng me. I went to a fısh restrant (very beautıful. rıght on the sea) and I ate a lıttle bıt of shrımp and a lot of ınk fısh! ıt was very good. The people also eat dessert after every meal. And Turkısh tea too! I love turkısh tea ıt ıs very good!
I am very sory ıf thıs emaıl ıs hard to read, The keybords on the computer are very much dıfferent and ıt ıs hard to fınd the englısh letters ın the rıght places!!!!!
I hope everythıng ıs goıng well for you.
Love Kaıtlyn
ps- Mom- My host famıly ıs goıng to Italy ın November. It was very difficult to communicate with her because her English was a bit hard to understand, but somehow we were able to exchange email addresses! Through emails I have found out that she is 16 and she is really nice! Ozlem and her mom are going to Italy shortly and will not be back until the 5th of September! So I am trying to get a flight out on the 8th to Istanbul! This will leave me some time to rest and get settled in before heading off to orientation camp which is the 16th through the 18th of September! My school begins right after that on the 19th! I am so excited this are finally coming together!
~Kaitlyn

Hey Everyone, Well it's August now (the month that I should be leaving) and I still have no idea when I am flying to Turkey! The last I had heard, They were trying to find a host family but the ones that they were coming accursed all had cats (I am extremely allergic to Cats). So the Rotary in Turkey is working on some more possible host families for me. Once I have a Host family then they will give me a date to leave on.
Its hard to really get the big picture that I am leaving for 11 months because I have no idea about where I will be living or when I am leaving! School is going to be starting in a month, so I hope I will be gone by then. Well that's all I guess, thought you might like an update (though nothing has really changed).
Oh, and for all of you who never knew that my country had changed, well here is a bit of it~ The Rotary in the Czech Republic had a problem and can't take anyone in this year (at least not from the US). So I had to pick another country (yes, I know, but I did PICK Turkey) at the last minute(the first week of July)!!!!!
LOVE~Kaitlyn~
